My home is in Discovery! Now what?

By Geneva Team

So your home is now Discoverable within the Geneva app… yay! Now people around the world can find your group and request to join 😊 Here are a few tips from our Community team on how to make the most of it.

(If you’re reading this but haven’t yet submitted your home for Discovery, you can learn more about how to do that here).

1. Add a question gate (if you don’t already have one!)

A question gate is a handy feature that lets you ask potential new members a series of questions to figure out if they’re a good fit for your community. You can ask general things like "Why do you want to join this group?" or more specific questions like “What’s the last book you read?”

Want to add a question gate? Head here to learn how to set one up.

2. You don’t have to approve everyone who requests to join

Now that you’re in Discovery, more people will probably try to join your group. Exciting! But you still have control over who you let it in. Don’t feel bad rejecting requests if something doesn’t feel right. If you do happen to let someone in and they end up not being a good fit, that’s ok! You can remove them from your home at any time.

If you ever feel like your home is getting too many requests, you can temporarily remove your home from Discovery and turn it back on whenever you’re ready.

3. Give new members context

People who find your group via Discovery may not have the full context on what your community’s all about, so it’s best to give new members some kind of intro to your home.

Here’s a few things we’ve seen work well!

a) Write a simple set of rules & a friendly welcome message to help set the tone.

b) Have a multiple-choice question as part of your question gate that’s like “How did you find this group?” For folks who say they found your home on Geneva or in Discovery, send them a personal DM introducing yourself and giving some more info about the community.

One more thing: ‘Home Discovery’ is just on iPhone and Android for now — so don’t be surprised if you check on the web or desktop app and don’t see it! You can still approve/reject people from any of the apps.

Good luck, have fun, and if you have any other questions, feel free to email us at hi@geneva.com!👋
